how do i host a website from my home pc?

aeaglenfitch asked:

i have a dell out in the garage that i’d like to turn into a server to host a site i want to use for a small business. and anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial or give me advice? also, will having this computer on my home network make the other computers vulnerable to hackers?

Just install some webserver on it like Apache.

Apache is pretty secure. Being connected to the Internet 24/7 *always* makes you more vulnerable to attack. Running a webserver only increases the risk slightly.

The risks associated with security and downtime far outweigh any benefits gained from cost savings. Also, it could drastically slow down your internet connection, and will ramp up your power bills. Go with the masses, and have a company host your website.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Go into your router config page and map all internet access to go directly to your computer, then install Apache or Abyss web server. Configure it accordingly, then go into the folder where you installed the webserver, and go into “htdocs” then copy and paste your website into there. Then if you go to 127.0.0.1 or localhost in Internet Explorer and BAM you should see your website, then check your router’s configuration to ensure that people that try to access your website, get directed to localhost or 127.0.0.1. This should solve your problem. If not let me know. PS. THIS IS VERY IN-SECURE, YOU ARE LETTING THE PLANET INTO YOUR COMPUTER. I recommend web hosting by a company like GoDaddy.
