My computer silently downloads about 175 MB/day. It is ezi_hnm2.exe (Dell Home Network Manager). Is it needed?

Michal asked:

Hello, I have a question regarding silent downloads of my computer. I recently installed a network monitor to control internet traffic and discovered that every hour, ezi_hnm2.exe (Dell Home Network Manager) downloads about 7.25 MB. That results in roughly 175 MB per day and roughly 5 GB per month if the computer is running most of the time. It seems like a huge potential waste of traffic limits. I was wondering if anyone knows what the program is downloading and why it is doing it. What possible information is needed for the upkeep of my network functionality? It does so whether I am on Wi-Fi or cable connection. Should I disable the program? Before I try to do so, I am trying to make sure I understand what it is doing, if only for curiosity. I suppose there is a reason for all this. (I have Windows XP and a Dell laptop, although this information is useless for this purpose.) Thanks a lot in advance for sharing if you know.
Thanks. I have just discovered, after some research, that it was updates. So nasty! It has been checking for updates every hour. (Once I manually started and update check, it downloaded exactly the aforementioned volume…) I can’t believe such an idiotic default setup has been made by Dell. I guess most inexperienced users are in the same situation, with network traffic increased for no reason. Anyway, thank you for the answer. Michal

I suppose it could be conidered a form of spyware, it wont only be downloading, but uploading as well, it could very well be a way that dell can handle support for your particular pc, but if your calculation is correct then 5gb a month is a lot to hold for each pc that the sell, id say it probably doesnt do a lot useful (could be that its just there or else you warranty is void or something ridiculous like that) check that warranty idea first, if it has nothing to do with it then it probably isnt worth it, if it must be installed for your warranty to be void or if you actually have a use for it in your home network, ive never even heard of it so i dont think you would, then simply block it, use your firewall or router to block whatever port its on

    PS
you shouldnt need a seperate network manager, the one in windows xp was “borrowed” from BeOS, one of Microsofts former compeditors, so it is pretty good as far as things from microsoft go
